Montenegro in Autumn: Foliage Drives and Harvest Festivals

Golden forests, wine harvests, empty roads, and lower rental prices.

The Secret Season

Ask ten tourists when to visit Montenegro and nine will say summer. The tenth, who has been before, will say autumn. October and November transform the country from a crowded Mediterranean beach destination into something quieter and arguably more beautiful. The forests turn gold and copper, the roads empty out, and rental car prices drop by 30-40 percent.

The coast is still warm enough for swimming through mid-October, with sea temperatures hovering around 21-22 degrees. In the mountains, the first snow dusts the peaks while the valleys below blaze with colour. It is the best time to drive in Montenegro, with clear visibility, cool temperatures, and almost no tourist traffic.

Biogradska Gora: Peak Foliage

If you only do one autumn drive in Montenegro, make it Biogradska Gora. The primeval forest contains over 80 tree species, and in late October the canopy becomes a patchwork of orange, gold, red, and deep green. The reflection in Biogradska Lake doubles the effect.

The park is between Mojkovac and Kolasin on the main north-south road. The 4-kilometre access road to the lake winds through the densest part of the forest. Go on a weekday morning when the light filters through the canopy and you might have the lake to yourself.

Durmitor in Early Autumn

Durmitor is at its best in September and early October, before the first serious snowfall. The larch trees that dot the high meadows turn bright yellow against the grey limestone peaks. Black Lake is quieter than in summer, and the hiking trails are less crowded.

By late October, the first snow starts sticking above 2,000 metres. If you time it right, you can see autumn colours in the valleys and snow on the peaks on the same drive. The road from Mojkovac to Zabljak stays open through November unless there is an early heavy snowfall.

Skadar Lake Autumn Run

Skadar Lake in autumn is a birdwatcher's dream. Migratory birds pass through in October, joining the resident pelicans and herons. The pomegranate and fig trees around the lakeshore are heavy with fruit, and the vineyards in the Crmnica valley are in full harvest mode.

The drive from Virpazar along the north shore to Rijeka Crnojevica is especially beautiful in autumn light. Stop at Pavlova Strana viewpoint for a photograph of the famous horseshoe bend in the river. Combine this drive with our wine road guide.

Harvest Festivals

Autumn is festival season in Montenegro, with food and wine celebrations happening in towns across the country.

  • Grape Harvest Festival (Virpazar, early October): Wine tastings, grape pressing, traditional music. The village is tiny and the atmosphere is genuine.
  • Chestnut Festival (Stoliv, Bay of Kotor, late October): The village of Stoliv celebrates its chestnut harvest with roasting, music, and local produce.
  • Olive Harvest (Bar region, November): The area around Bar produces most of Montenegro's olive oil. November brings harvest festivals with tastings and press demonstrations.
  • Maslinijada (Stari Bar, late November): A larger olive festival with cooking competitions, oil tastings, and crafts stalls in the old town ruins.

Coastal Autumn

The coast in autumn is a different world from the summer madness. Kotor's Old Town, which can see 15,000 cruise ship passengers a day in August, drops to a few hundred visitors in October. Restaurants stay open but the queues disappear. You can park in spots that would be impossible in July.

Sea swimming is possible through mid-October along the southern coast near Bar and Ulcinj, where the water stays warmest. The Bay of Kotor cools faster but the sheltered coves in Lustica still reach 20 degrees in early October. Evenings get cool, so pack a light jacket for waterfront dinners.

Autumn Travel Tips

  • Layers: Coastal days are 18-24°C but mountain mornings can be near freezing. Dress in layers you can add and remove.
  • Daylight: Sunset moves from 6:30pm in October to 4:30pm in November. Plan mountain drives to finish before dark.
  • Roads: Wet leaves on mountain roads reduce grip. Drive slower on shaded bends after rain.
  • Booking: Rental cars are 30-40% cheaper in autumn than summer. Accommodation prices also drop significantly outside Budva.
