What car should you rent in Montenegro?
For most Montenegro trips a compact car or a small SUV is the right rental, and you almost never need a true 4x4. The coast roads, the motorway and even the famous mountain passes are all paved and handled comfortably by an ordinary car. What actually changes the answer is where you spend your time, how many of you there are, and the season. You can compare every class in the fleet for live prices; the short version follows.
Do you need a 4x4 in Montenegro?
Almost never. Montenegro's main roads are tarmacked and well kept, including the Kotor serpentine, the Lovćen pass and the climbs toward Durmitor, so a normal front-wheel-drive car copes with them in good weather. A 4x4 only earns its place if you plan to drive unpaved mountain back-roads, reach remote trailheads, or travel in deep winter when snow closes the higher routes. Four-wheel-drive cars are available (40+ in the fleet) if your trip needs one, but a compact SUV with extra ground clearance covers most rough-road situations for less. For the coast and the motorway, the smallest car on the list is plenty.

Automatic or manual?
Most of the fleet is automatic (300+ cars), with a smaller pool of manuals (60+) that rent for less. Automatics are easier on the steep coastal hairpins, where a manual means constant gear changes, which is why they go first in July and August. If you only drive automatic, book early in summer; if you are happy with a manual, you will usually pay less and have more choice.
What size and class is best?
The fleet spans six classes: Economy (130+ cars), Standard (100+), SUV (80+), Lux (50+), Convertibles (15+) and Vans (60+). For two people staying on the coast, an economy hatchback is the most practical and the cheapest to park and fuel. For a couple touring the whole country, a mid-size adds comfort on the long drives. Families or groups of four-plus want an SUV or van for the boot space and child seats, which are added at booking. Convertibles suit a summer coast trip when the weather is settled.
Petrol, diesel or hybrid?
Diesel is the bigger half of the fleet (200+ cars) and the better choice for a road trip, since the long motorway and canyon miles reward its economy and mid-range pull for overtaking. Petrol cars (150+) suit short, mostly-town trips. A growing hybrid pool (25+) is the most economical for stop-start coastal driving. Fuel stations are frequent on the coast and the main inland roads but sparser in the far north, so fill up before long mountain legs.

Parking and narrow streets
The old towns of Kotor and Budva are pedestrian-only, with paid car parks just outside that fill from mid-morning in summer, so a smaller car is easier to fit and cheaper by the hour. Many coastal villages have tight lanes and steep driveways where a compact is far less stressful than a large SUV. If you are based on the coast, the easiest place to collect is Tivat Airport in the bay, and the smallest class is usually the smartest choice once you arrive.
Driving in winter
From mid-November to the start of April, winter tyres or chains are required by law on roads north of the coast, and snow can close the highest passes around Durmitor. Ask for the winter pack (snow tyres, and chains where needed) at booking if your plans include the mountains in the cold months, where the fastest start is Podgorica Airport and its year-round flights. On the coast itself, winter driving is mild and an ordinary car is fine year-round.
Where to pick up your car
Most visitors collect at an airport on arrival, with in-town pickups and hotel delivery also available in the main coastal towns. If you want to land at one airport and leave from another, a one-way rental covers the whole trip without doubling back. Whichever class you choose, the same six categories are offered across every pickup point.
Montenegro car-choice FAQs
The questions travellers ask most when deciding what to rent for Montenegro: 4x4 or not, automatic availability, the best class for the mountains, and fuel.
Do you need a 4x4 to drive in Montenegro?
No, not for normal travel. The coast roads, the motorway and the paved mountain passes are all fine in an ordinary front-wheel-drive car. A 4x4 only helps on unpaved back-roads or in deep winter snow, and four-wheel-drive cars are available if your trip genuinely needs one.
Are automatic cars available in Montenegro?
Yes, most of the fleet is automatic. They are the easier choice on the steep coastal hairpins, and they rent out first in July and August, so book early in summer if you only drive automatic.
What is the best car for the Montenegro mountains?
A compact SUV. It adds ground clearance and comfort for the climbs to Durmitor and Žabljak without the cost of a full 4x4. In summer the paved routes are fine in any car; an SUV mainly helps on gravel and in rougher weather.
Should I rent a diesel or a petrol car?
Diesel for a road trip, since the long motorway miles reward its economy and overtaking pull. Petrol for short, mostly-town trips. Hybrids are the most economical for stop-start coastal driving.
Can a small car handle the Kotor serpentine?
Yes. The serpentine above Kotor is narrow with many hairpins but fully paved, and a small automatic actually makes it easier than a manual. Take it slowly and use the laybys to let faster traffic pass.
What size car do I need for a family?
An SUV or estate for four or more with luggage, for the boot space and the height. Child seats are added as an extra at booking.
Do I need winter tyres in Montenegro?
Between mid-November and early April, winter tyres or chains are legally required on roads north of the coast. Ask for the winter pack at booking if you will be in the mountains; the coast itself stays mild.
Do I need a credit card to rent a smaller car?
Most cars can be booked without a credit card; you can pay by cash, debit card or crypto at pickup. Some cars require an embossed credit card for the deposit, so filter for no-credit-card options if that suits you better.
Car hire since 2007. Free cancellation, most cars without credit card, pickup at Tivat and Podgorica airports.
