Why rent a car in Montenegro?
Montenegro is compact but spread out. The destinations worth the trip sit on the coast (Kotor, Budva, Sveti Stefan), inland (Podgorica, Cetinje, Lake Skadar) and in the northern mountains (Durmitor, Biogradska Gora, Tara Canyon), and the bus network thins out fast outside the coastal strip. A rental car gives you the canyon roads, lake circuits and viewpoints that public transport will not. Daily rates start from around €20 across 375+ cars in the local fleet when you rent a car in Montenegro through us; no credit card is required at any stage, and city delivery is available on 300+ listings.
Where do I collect my Montenegro hire car?
Two airport options sit at either end of the country: Podgorica Airport car hire is at the terminal car park in the capital, and Tivat Airport car rental uses the same terminal-park setup on the coast. You can also pick up at a rental office in town or use free city delivery. City delivery is available on 300+ listings; the supplier brings the rental car to your accommodation within the town limits. The "Guaranteed car model" tag applies to every car in the fleet, so the model you book is the model you collect.
Daily rates are identical at every pickup point in the country, so where you collect from is a convenience choice, not a price lever. See the full Montenegro pickup locations map for every collection point on the coast and inland.

The Montenegro car rental booking process
Renting a car in Montenegro runs in a few steps: pick your dates and pickup point, filter the fleet to the car class and features you want, choose a specific listing, add any extras and the insurance tier you want, then confirm. The fleet carries around 375+ vehicles in total, with real photos of the actual car on 350+ of those listings. Rentals start from around €20/day. No credit card is required at any stage of the booking; every car is bookable without one.
Most cars are instant-confirm (look for the lightning-bolt icon). Cars without this icon are available on request, with the request processed automatically. If the rental car is available, you are notified by email and can complete the booking; if it is unavailable, alternative options are offered. The whole loop usually completes within a few minutes of submitting the request.
What documents do I need to rent a car in Montenegro?
Two documents are needed at pickup: a valid driving licence and a passport or national ID. Licences not in Roman script also require an International Driving Permit, obtained in your home country before travel. If you add a second driver to the rental agreement, the second driver must bring their own licence and passport, and must meet the same age and driving-experience requirements as the main driver.
Cars in the fleet are available from 18+ years old with 1+ years driving experience. Age and experience requirements vary by vehicle (an example Peugeot 208 listing requires 21-70 years and 3 years of experience); use the Filters to set your age and experience and the booking widget will show the cars that fit you. An "Other age?" link is provided on individual car pages for ages outside a listed range.
Should I rent an automatic or manual car in Montenegro?
Both gearbox types are in the fleet, with automatic dominant at 310+ listings versus around 65+ manual cars. Automatic is the easier choice on the coastal road through Kotor and Budva, on the canyon switchbacks above the Tara and Morača, and on the climbs to Lovćen and Durmitor; constant gear-changes on those routes wear you down fast. Manual rewards confident drivers and tends to come in cheaper per day on equivalent models. Use the Gearbox filter at booking to narrow the fleet to your preference before you choose a listing.
What insurance comes with a Montenegro car rental?
Insurance comes in four tiers, in the order they appear in the booking flow. Per-day prices for the three paid tiers are set per car and shown on each vehicle page; the cards below describe what each tier covers and the deposit position.
Full Coverage Plus
Paid extra- Full damage coverage
- No driver liability for accident-related damage
- Glass and wheel damage coverage
Full Coverage
Paid extra- Full coverage with limited driver liability (SuperCDW)
- Coverage for collision damage caused to other vehicles (TPL)
Basic coverage
Paid extra- Limited collision coverage (CDW)
- Coverage for collision damage caused to other vehicles (TPL)
- Glass and wheel damage coverage
Minimum coverage
Free of charge- Coverage for collision damage caused to other vehicles (TPL)
- Collision damage coverage
- Glass and wheel damage coverage
For the full per-tier feature comparison and how each tier handles deposits, glass, wheel and driver-liability damage, see our Montenegro car rental insurance comparison.
Personal Accident Insurance is a separate optional add-on covered below. It pays out for damage caused to the health of passengers in an accident, covers people not vehicles, and is independent of the four damage-coverage tiers above.

How does the deposit work on a Montenegro hire car?
The standard deposit at pickup is around €100 on the Minimum, Basic and Full Coverage tiers, refundable at the end of the rental. The Full Coverage Plus tier waives the deposit entirely. A deposit-amount selector at booking lets you cap exposure at €100, €150 or €200 if you want a lower ceiling.
Ways to pay the deposit
To skip the deposit entirely, use the "No deposit" filter (40+ cars) or its paid-service variant (120+ cars), which covers the deposit as a small add-on so you do not leave any cash at pickup.
The rental payment itself is separate from the deposit. Cash is accepted on every car in the fleet, card on 300+ listings, crypto on 90+. Every car carries the "No credit card" tag, so a credit card is never required to complete the booking.
How does free cancellation work?
Free cancellation is offered on selected vehicles, not all. 170+ listings carry the Free cancelation tag. Full refund of the advance payment if you cancel more than 24 hours before receiving the rental car; if cancelled less than 24 hours before, the advance payment is not refundable.
Is unlimited mileage included on Montenegro car hire?
Unlimited mileage is included on nearly every listing (370+). The handful of listings that have a per-day kilometre cap show the mileage limit on the vehicle page before you book (the example Peugeot 208 listing shows "Mileage limit: No"). Filter for "Unlimited mileage" in the booking flow to pre-screen.

Can I drive a Montenegro rental car across borders?
A cross-border permit is required to drive the rental car into Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Albania, Kosovo, Macedonia, EU countries or Switzerland. Three tiers are available, each with its own permitted-country list:
Neighbouring and distant countries
200+ cars- Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia
- Albania, Kosovo
- Macedonia
- All EU countries
- Switzerland
Neighbouring countries including Albania and Kosovo
140+ cars- Croatia
- Bosnia and Herzegovina
- Serbia
- Albania
- Kosovo
Neighbouring countries (except Albania and Kosovo)
270+ cars- Croatia
- Bosnia and Herzegovina
- Serbia
Cross-border permit prices vary by car and appear at the permit step of the booking.

What add-ons can I book and how do they work?
Paid add-ons are selected during booking, on the vehicle page, before you confirm. The supplier delivers them physically at pickup: child seats are installed before handover, the Winter Pack means snow tyres fitted for the rental window, and the second driver is added to the rental agreement on site once their licence and passport are presented. Per-day rates depend on the vehicle class; the booking widget displays the exact rate before you confirm, so the same item can carry a different rate on a Lux car versus an Economy car.

Tips for driving in Montenegro
Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, 80 km/h on open roads, and 100 km/h on the motorway sections. The coastal road between Herceg Novi, Kotor and Budva is narrow and slow in summer traffic; allow more time than mapping apps suggest. Mountain routes around Durmitor and the Tara Canyon include steep gradients, switchbacks and sections without crash barriers, so a calm pace and lower gears matter. Parking in Kotor old town and central Budva is tight in season; use marked car parks rather than the kerb. The Winter Pack add-on covers winter-tyre requirements on the northern mountain routes for cold-season rentals.
Returning your Montenegro rental car
Return is at the same pickup point unless a different drop-off was agreed at booking. Bring the rental car back with the fuel level recorded in the rental agreement at pickup, and leave enough time for the supplier's walk-around inspection. Drop-off for Podgorica Airport is in the terminal car park, so build in 10 to 15 extra minutes for the handover. The deposit is released once the inspection is done and any agreed extras are settled. Late returns past the contracted hour can attract an extra-day charge, so flag any change of plan to the supplier in advance rather than turning up late at the lot. Tivat Airport follows the same terminal-park drop-off pattern.
Common questions about renting a car in Montenegro
Can I book a car in Montenegro without a credit card?
Yes. The "No credit card" tag applies to every car in the booking widget. The standard deposit at pickup is around €100 in cash on the lower insurance tiers; the Full Coverage Plus tier waives the deposit entirely.
What's the minimum driver age?
Cars are available from 18+ with 1+ year of driving experience. Requirements vary by vehicle; the booking widget filters by age and experience to show what fits you.
Can I add a second driver?
Yes. A second driver can be added to the rental agreement. The second driver must meet the same age and driving experience requirements as the main driver, and bring their driving licence and passport to the pickup. The supplier charges an extra-driver fee at pickup.
Are child seats available?
Yes. Three options on most listings: child safety seat (up to 1 year old, Group 0+, for children 0-1.5 years and body weight 0-10 kg), standard child seat, and child booster seat. Exact prices appear on each vehicle page at booking.
Are winter tyres / snow chains needed?
The Winter Pack add-on is available on 330+ cars and is the supplier-managed option for winter conditions on Montenegrin mountain routes. Confirm at pickup whether your rental is in season.
Are GPS / navigation systems rentable?
We do not rent out navigation systems, and we honestly recommend a phone map app over the now-outdated stand-alone GPS units anyway. Phone apps give you live traffic, easier search, and offline maps. Download the offline pack before any drive through canyon stretches where mobile signal drops.
