Car Hire in Nikšić

Montenegro's mountain gateway to Durmitor, Ostrog and the lakes.

Nikšić, the Mountain Base Most Tourists Miss

Nikšić is Montenegro's second-largest city and the one most road-trippers drive through without stopping. That's a mistake if your plan includes Durmitor National Park, Ostrog Monastery or Lake Piva — Nikšić is the staging town for every one of them, the place where the coast's tourist economy ends and real inland Montenegro begins.

It's an industrial city with a brewery founded in 1896 (Nikšićko Pivo, still the national beer), a sprawling fortress above the plain, and two swimmable lakes (Krupac and Slano) within 5 km of the centre. Prices for car rental, food and accommodation are the lowest of any major town in Montenegro. Most crucially: in peak summer, when Kotor is a slow-moving queue, Nikšić has parking and breathing room.

Why Nikšić is the right base for the mountains

If you're coming to Montenegro for Durmitor, Piva Lake, the Tara Canyon or Ostrog Monastery, you'll drive past Nikšić anyway — it's on every northern route from the coast or Podgorica. Basing here for 2–3 nights cuts 1–2 hours of daily driving and costs a third of what you'd pay on the coast. The trade-off is that you're 90 minutes from a beach.

Pickup options

Podgorica Airport is the natural entry — 60 km south, 45 minutes on the new four-lane M2. Tivat Airport is 100 km south-west, about 1 h 40 min via Cetinje. We also offer delivery to the Nikšić railway station (the Bar–Belgrade line stops here) and to town-centre hotels free of charge.

The right car for Nikšić and the north

This is the one region where an SUV genuinely earns its keep. The road to Piva Lake via Plužine is paved but narrow and exposed. The ring road around Durmitor has tight hairpins that benefit from a higher driving position. The Ostrog pilgrimage road is paved but steep. For coast-only trips a compact is fine; for anything inland past Nikšić we recommend at minimum a mid-size, ideally a Jeep Renegade or Dacia Duster. See our SUV options.

In and around Nikšić itself

The Bedem Fortress was founded by the Romans and rebuilt by the Ottomans — today it's a partially restored ruin free to wander, with clear views over the Nikšić plain. King Nikola's Palace on the main square houses a modest heritage museum. The Nikšićko Brewery runs tours most weekdays; book at the visitor centre. Trebjesa hill, 300 m above town, is a 30-minute walk up with a quiet pine forest and a second-hand souvenir of a defunct ski jump.

The lakes on your doorstep

Lake Krupac (3 km west) and Lake Slano (4 km north) are both swimmable freshwater lakes ringed by pine forest. Slano is quieter; Krupac has a single lakeside bar and a pebble beach. Either is a practical alternative to the coast if you're on a tight itinerary and want to swim after a mountain day.

Driving tips from Nikšić

Fuel stations are reliable in town and at Plužine; between Plužine and Žabljak on the Piva route, plan a top-up. Snow tyres are mandatory 15 November–1 April on most northern routes — our fleet is equipped in season by default. Mobile signal drops in the Piva canyon; download offline maps before you leave Nikšić.

The key mountain day trips

Ostrog Monastery — 20 km east, 35 minutes up a serpentine road. Montenegro's most important Orthodox shrine, built into a sheer cliff face at 900 m.

Durmitor National Park + Black Lake — 65 km, about 1 h 30 min. Walk the Black Lake loop (3.5 km, flat) and catch the view from Curevac ridge. See our national parks road-trip guide for the full Durmitor loop.

Piva Lake + Piva Monastery — 50 km west; a dam-created turquoise lake, 56 tunnels on the access road, and a 16th-century monastery relocated stone by stone in the 1970s.

Tara Bridge + Tara Canyon — 105 km north via Žabljak; Europe's deepest canyon, the Đurđevića bridge, and a 600 m zipline if you're feeling brave. Also see our Tara Canyon drive guide.

Frequently asked questions

Should I base in Nikšić or in Žabljak for Durmitor?

If you want one dedicated mountain day plus coast time, base in Nikšić — it connects to both. If Durmitor is your whole trip, Žabljak (inside the park) is the better base but more expensive and limited for food.

Is a 4x4 required for Ostrog Monastery?

No. The road is fully paved and any compact car makes it up easily. It's steep and narrow — drive slowly, use low gears on the descent, and watch for pilgrim buses.

Can I visit Nikšić in winter?

Yes, and it's a good base for ski trips to Durmitor. Snow tyres are mandatory 15 November–1 April on mountain routes. Our winter-season cars come equipped.

How long does the drive from Nikšić to the coast take?

About 1 h 45 min to Kotor or Budva via the new four-lane section to Podgorica then the coastal road. Slightly longer via the Cetinje route but much more scenic.

Is it cheaper to rent a car from Nikšić than from Tivat?

The daily rental rate is the same nationally; the difference is the delivery fee. Collecting in Nikšić itself (or at Podgorica Airport, 60 km south) is usually cheaper than a Tivat pickup with Nikšić drop.

What's there to do in Nikšić for a half-day?

Walk Bedem Fortress, lunch at a traditional konoba, brewery tour or Lake Krupac swim. Most travellers stay 2–3 nights and use Nikšić as the mountain launchpad rather than the destination.
